Lessons from Occupy Wall Street Trial run with 9 detained, one held overnight
Police up to their old RNC 2004 civil rights violations?
By Anti-Capitalist Convergence Veteran from DC
On Sep 1, 12 people carried out a "test run," for the Occupation of Wall Street scheduled to begin a week from now on September 17.They showed up on Wall Street with tents, planning to stay over one night. Nine of them were detained and one held overnight by the NYPD. Video | Related: DC Pirate radio promo for Occupy Wall Street and Stop the machine
Keywords: Analysis, Manhattan,
The police tactic was as simple as it was a violation of the 1st Amendment: Tell everyone to move on or be arrested for "disorderly conduct." If this police conduct were legal, essentially ALL protest would become illegal.
Already the NY pigs are up to the same shit they pulled against the 2004 GOP Convention protests. Didn't stop us then, won't stop anyone now.
Still, to prevent an outright police victory over the entire event will require sufficient numbers to overwhelm the NYPD,forcing them to mobilize to the extent they did during the 2004 RNC.
If tens of thousands of people are present, and thousands refuse the police commands to leave, both the logistics and the potential civil liability in court would be daunting even for the notorious NYPD.
If police are unwilling to fence off whole blocks and mass arrest everyone inside, or if doing so would mean arresting suit-and-tie Wall Street traders, they will be the ones facing an outright defeat on Wall Street.
This protest, properly organized, could force NYC to choose between conceding Wall Street to protesters, or arresting protesters and stock traders alike and indiscriminately, and on a scale even larger than during the RNC.
Just imagine the ugly spectacle of the NYPD again fencing off whole blocks, this time on Wall Street, in orange "Freedom Fence" and again using Pier 57 as "Gitmo on the Hudson." Just imagine 500+ stock traders getting mistakenly mass arrested along with protesters! Since this sort of shit was the signature in NY of George W Bush and the RNC, the press would be incredibly bad.
If the Wall Street firms tell the NYPD that stock traders must be protected from mistaken arrest, and if tens or thousands of protesters show up, the result could be checkmate for the NYPD. For this situation to be sustained, the majority of the protesters must be NY locals or others able to stay on target for a sustained occupation lasting at least one week, preferably indefinitely.
If this fails and the NYPD somehow manages to defeat the original plan, smaller mobile units operating under diversity of tactics rules of engagement would have the flexibility to run the cops ragged. This probably should be held in reserve, not to be deployed unless the police defeat the nonviolent occupation outright.
Requiring a few thousand people, maybe only a few hundred, deploying for short hit-and-run protests, focusing on the times Wall Street is open for business, they would be able to sow months of chaos. Think, 3 guys riding bikes pulling trailers full of bricks , with the trailers and their loads simply overturned and abandoned can shut down an intersection as long as a lockdown with conventional lockboxes. Now imagine 10 such teams each targeted on 10 intersections, half of them intercepted, half of them not. Imagine the gridlock-Checkmate again!
Remember the People's Strike, widely and incorrectly reported as a defeat due to the Pershing Park mass arrest at the end. Before protesters even deployed, unmanned burning tires blockades shut down GW Parkway and Chain Bridge. Five Metro stations opened late due to glued locks, and nobody was ever caught for any of these actions. In fact, the statute of limitations for Federal felonies has now expired on the blocking of Chain bridge. Even before any of that, former police chief Ramsey told commuters to stay home, and a lot of businesses were closed, so much so that morning rush hour never appeared.
The bridge and Metro blockades, BTW, did not involve violence and could even be fit inside some "nonviolence" guidelines, depending on how they are written and interpreted. In 1998, there was another blockade incident in DC aimed at the Pentagon, for an action called "a Day without the Pentagon." All summer long, nonviolent protesters told the newspapers they were going to block interstate 395 to cut off access to the Pentagon. Fearing massive backups, the police begged and begged them to block only the Pentagon off-ramps, and they made a big show of agreeing to do so. Knowing this was coming, the Pentagon told all their people to use the Metro that day-and guess what really got blockaded?
This was pre 9-11, pre-anthrax, so at that time (1998) they were able to get away with pouring something that looked like blood into the Metro escalators as well as blockading them, leading to a protracted shutdown and major headaches for Pentagon bigwigs having to hoof it from Pentagon City.
That was a master stroke of tactical planning, an act of pure on-the-ground genius from mainstream antiwar pacifists operating under their usual rules of engagement. Today the blood probably could not be used, but as that was simply a tool to close the escalators, surely it could be replaced with something different that does not invoke post 9-11 fears.
Just imagine Wall Street with key road intersections closed by unmanned "drone" blockades of heavy construction debris and staged "auto accidents" at the same time that subway lines are disrupted and Anonymous chokes off remote Internet access to Wall Street offices!

Hey jammers,
#OCCUPYWALLSTREET is happening right now at Liberty Plaza!
It started last Saturday, when 5,000 Americans descended on to the financial district of Lower Manhattan, waved signs, unfurled banners, beat drums, chanted slogans and proceeded to walk towards the "financial Gomorrah" of the nation. They vowed to "occupy Wall Street" and to "bring justice to the bankers", but the New York police thwarted their efforts, locking down the symbolic street with barricades and checkpoints. Undeterred, protesters walked laps around the area before holding a people's assembly and setting up a semi-permanent protest encampment in a park on Liberty Street, a stone's throw from Wall Street and a block from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
Three hundred spent the night, several hundred reinforcements arrived the next day and as we write this, the encampment is digging in for a long-term stay. #OCCUPYWALLSTREET has been established in Zuccotti Park, which has now been renamed Liberty Plaza. With Liberty Plaza liberated, and acting as a base in the financial district, the indignados have been sending out raiding parties to nearby Wall Street and beyond.
Bravo to those courageous souls in the encampment on New York's Liberty Street. Every night that #OCCUPYWALLSTREET continues will escalate the possibility of a full-fledged global uprising against business as usual.
Now, it is crucial for everyone from all over the world to flock to the encampment. Call in to work sick, invite your friends and hop on a bus or plane to New York City.
PS. The media is finally buzzing about #OCCUPYWALLSTREET. There have been reports at Democracy Now!, MSNBC, CNN, WSJ, NYT, El Pais and elsewhere.

Emergency - Occupy Wall St Eviction
Urgent -- tomorrow at 7 am, the New York City police plan to evict the Occupy Wall Street protesters.
The only way to stop the eviction is a roaring outcry to New York's billionaire mayor, Mike Bloomberg, and to the owners of the protest park. We must show them that their global reputations are on the line.
Let's flood their offices with phone calls! Avaaz will tell the media about the numbers of calls made, multiplying their impact on the public image of Bloomberg and Richard B. Clark -- the CEO of the company that owns the park. If enough of us call now, we could turn the tide and stop the eviction--but only hours are left!
Call the Mayor and Brookfield Properties Here: New York mayor Michael Bloomberg: +1-212-NEW-YORK (639-9675) Brookfield CEO Richard Clark: +1-212-417-7063 Brookfield US headquarters: +1-212-417-7000 Brookfield Canada headquarters: +1-416-369-2300 Brookfield Australia headquarters: +61-2-9322-2000 After calling, post a message about how the call went -- to help Avaaz count the number of calls made, and demonstrate the wave of worldwide support for the protesters.
Suggestions for your call: Say that you have a message for Brookfield CEO Richard Clark or NYC Mayor Bloomberg (depending on who you are calling) Stop the eviction of Zuccotti Park We have a constitutional right to protest. This is one of the biggest shows of public outrage in decades and these people represent hundreds of thousands across the world who stand with the protesters and the movement for real democracy. The protesters are cleaning up the park, keeping it clean and safe http://www.avaaz.org/en/emergency_callin_to_stop_eviction/?vl
We can help make sure the thousands of protesters rights to freedom of speech and assembly are respected by calling Billionare Bloomberg and Brookfield. Forward to everyone!
