On Sunday the 13th of December, around 6:30 in the afternoon a group of around 12 people, holding globs, sprays and knives attacked 2 young people at Faneromenis Square . It was obvious that the attack was organised. The group formed a Π around those who were beating up the 2 youngsters and wouldn't allow anyone to approach, obeying to army mode orders from the one in charge. They were wearing hoods and some of them were wearing orange scarves. They attacked very fast and left towards Onasagorou Street . It seems that the incident was not random but well organised.
This is the second attack at Faneromenis square by fascist elements, in the last period. Yet, the attacks by members of the extreme right wing are common in the area, mostly against migrants but also against people, whose looks the fascist don't like, like people with long hair etc.
Faneromenis Square functions as an open social gathering centre for the exchange of ideas and for alternative anticommercial activities and actions and it seems that that is why it is targeted.
The impudent attitude of the fascist elements has to be faced by the reaction of the society before we begin mourning for victims!
At the meeting, which followed the incident, on Monday, it was decided to call sensitised citizens and groups to an open meeting at the premises of KISA on Friday 18/12/09 at 18.30 to take decisions upon actions against the fascist elation, in view also of the programmed demonstration of ELAM “against illegal migration” under the slogan “each foreign worker = an unemployed [Cypriot].” Your presence is essential!
